Man, girlfriend held for forging wife's documents for loan

Mumbai: A 33-year-old man and his girlfriend were arrested for allegedly forging documents of his wife to secure a loan from a bank, police said on Sunday.

The accused, identified as Salil Amrute (33) and Sonia Gupta (37), were arrested on Saturday after Amrute's wife Arya lodged an FIR with the Goregaon police for forging her documents.

According to the police, Amrute, who is a small time musician, asked Sonia to pose as his wife to get a loan from the bank in which he held a joint account with his estranged wife Arya. The duo has been living separately since 2007 due to alleged harassment by Amrute.

Police said that Amrute tampered with the PAN card of Arya by replacing her photograph with that of Sonia's, who works as an event manager, and also produced a fake letter as a residential proof.

After the bank contacted the chairman of the society, whose letter the duo has submitted to the bank, the latter denied having issued any such letter.

The bank then intimated the police who discovered that she was Sonia and not Arya with whom Amrute was staying with.

After the police contacted Arya, she registered a case against Amrute and Gupta.
