If you have sensitive skin, you already know that a light hand and constant caution are your permanent companions. And that isn't just for your skincare routine and showering habits, it's also for hair removal.
Even for hair removal, the more sensitive-skinned among us must take a few precautions, especially when it comes to the most popular hair removal method, waxing. Make it a point to avoid undue sun exposure or too much of coffee (or alcohol!) to calm your nerves before as this can amplify the skin's sensitivity. Additionally, never wax when you're on your period as your skin is even more sensitive during this time. What you can do is eat a banana or sip a glass of OJ which are rich enough in potassium to decrease sensitivity.
Along with those tips, we got Dr. Kiran Lohia, American board-certified dermatologist and founder of Lumiere Dermatology to tell us how to make the process easier on your skin.
1. Test The Waters
If you have sensitive skin and you're new to waxing, it's important to test the waters when it comes to this hair removal method. "Waxing can cause irritability for sensitive skin. Furthermore, it has a tendency to lead to ingrowth, also known as chicken skin, especially for people with sensitive skin," advises Dr Lohia. If you notice any irritability, redness or bumps after waxing, it's a sign that your skin is far too sensitive for it. In such cases, more gentle methods like shaving might be a better option.
2. Never Dry Out
It doesn't end at waxing, unfortunately. Post waxing is when you have to be even more careful. Says Dr. Lohia, "Make sure to moisturise your skin after waxing to soothe it. Even on a regular basis, moisturising your skin keeps it hydrated and soft, making it easier to wax."
3. Don't Forget To Sanitise
Even one thing going wrong while waxing sensitive skin can lead to a world of trouble. "Improper waxing can leave the skin prone to infections like folliculitis. That's why it's important to apply an antiseptic lotion before and after waxing," says Dr. Lohia. This will keep bacteria at bay during the whole process.
4. Avoid It For Your Face
When it comes to hair removal on facial areas like your eyebrows, upper lip, chin and sideburns, waxing isn't ideal as facial skin is far more delicate and sensitive than the skin on your arms and legs. "Avoid waxing your facial area for skin that's already sensitive. Instead, opt for other methods such as shaving or laser as they are much more gentle."
