- Mira Kapoor experienced redness and acne from a complex skincare routine
- She stopped over-cleansing to avoid stripping natural skin oils and dryness
- Using multiple strong actives can damage the skin's natural barrier
Open Instagram, and you'll find an influencer telling you about a new product that you must add to your skincare routine. There is no end to the ingredient list, comprising peptides, retinal, AHA, BHA, vitamin C, niacinamide, azelaic acid, salicylic acid, and tretinoin. For every ingredient, there is a new product. Before you know it, you end up with a drawer full of skincare products, but not necessarily flawless skin.
Mira Kapoor's latest video proves that she, too, has been a victim of information overload on the internet, especially social media. She revealed that she once followed a complex skincare routine but ended up with redness, acne, acne marks, and pigmentation.
How Mira Kapoor Fixed Her Dry, Sensitive Skin
The first thing Mira Kapoor changed about her skincare routine was over-cleansing. "I used to think that squeaky-clean skin means that the cleanser does its job. But I was just stripping my skin every day, and it left my skin very dry and sensitive. Now, I want to stick to a gentle, barrier-balancing formula," she said.
The entrepreneur realised that cleansing the skin does not require stripping away its natural oils. She added that once you get into the habit of double-cleansing, especially in dry weather, your skin can start becoming excessively dry.
Strong Actives
Social media is flooded with recommendations for strong active ingredients. From retinal to salicylic acid, influencers promote products left, right, and centre, though it is difficult to know how effective they are for everyone in reality.
As a result, when you use multiple active ingredients and layer them together, you risk damaging your skin's natural barrier. "BHA over vitamin C, over glycolic acid. It's really easy to get carried away, but a lot of layering does not mean faster results. It's a damaged skin barrier waiting to happen," the Akind Beauty founder shared.
Blindly Following Trends
Every week, a new skincare product takes the spotlight on social media. Before you know it, dozens of influencers appear on your feed promoting it, listing its benefits, and claiming to be obsessed with it because it delivers glowing skin and dramatic results.
Mira Kapoor shared that she had also given in to these trends. "I have done slugging, we have done basting, and we've tried tons of things. But the thing is, it can work in cold, dry weather. In our climate, I don't think it really works," she added.
Now, Mira has a simple skincare mantra: "Keep it simple, keep it consistent, and stay suited to your environment." In fact, many experts also recommend keeping skincare routines as simple as possible.
