Balenciaga has never shied away from skirting controversy. In fact, they might just revel in it. The French fashion label has thrived with their novel designs that leave the audience in shock and awe. Their latest launch followed the same fashion. Balenciaga's latest drop came in the form of a unisex skirt. Sounds normal enough, right? Named the Balenciaga Towel Skirt, the product is made of 100% terry cotton with an adjustable fit for all genders to wear. It also features a belt with a buckle and buttons in its interior. As per the official website, the Balenciaga Towel Skirt costs $925, which converts to approximately Rs 77,000 and belongs to Balenciaga's Spring 2024 Collection Take a look at their new garment, which is where it gets bizarre.

Even those willing to splurge on premium designer goods will be able to find the resemblance between Balenciaga's new Towel Skirt and an ordinary bathing towel draped around the waist when exiting the shower. In fact, the similarity is so evident, one might not even be able to tell them apart; except for the designer logo embroidered over the front of the former. Balenciaga's gimmicky new launch has led to it be the subject of memes over the world. Swedish homeware brand IKEA took a stab at the meme fest on social media, with their affordably priced version of the towel skirt worn by a Balenciaga-esque male model.
Balenciaga has always aimed to astound the audience with their designs. In 2022, they released a purse fashioned like a packet of Lay's chips that cost $1,500, which is a whopping Rs 1,20,000 approximately.
Back in the summer of 2022, Balenciaga also dropped a limited-edition line of sneakers which came in "a retooled classic design" that were specially made of "distressed canvas and rough edges, affecting a pre-worn look." The sneakers were priced at a mind-boggling $1,850, or approximately Rs 1,42,000 lakhs, and went viral nearly instantly.
