Disputed waterbody was recorded as land by mistake: West Bengal govt

Kolkata: The West Bengal government today admitted that the 137-acre water body at Dankuni, that was allegedly filled up by the Railways for a project, was recorded as a land by mistake in 1986.

State Land and Land Revenue department officials admitted so in a hearing before the Parliamentary Standing Committee of the state Assembly, Committee chairman Tarapada Chakraborty said.

He said so at the state secretariat after a meeting with the state's agriculture minister Naren De. Chakraborty, however, argued that the Railway Ministry had leased out the disputed water body to fishermen till March 2011 knowing that it was a wetland.

The Committee would soon submit a report before the House, Chakraborty said. The state government had recently decided to take action against the Railways for allegedly filling up the water body.
