Elections are being held today for 18 Rajya Sabha seats in five states. Some of the big names fighting for a Rajya Sabha seat are:
- Noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani fielded by the BJP in Rajasthan
- Industrialist Vijay Mallya contesting as an Independent from Karnataka.
- Former BJP President M. Venkaiah Naidu from Karnataka
- Oscar Fernandes of the Congress in Karnataka
- Ram Vilas Paswan of the Lok Janshakti Party and backed by Lalu Yadav's RJD in Bihar
- Anand Sharma, Commerce Minister of the Congress in Rajasthan
- Ram Kripal Yadav of the RJD in Bihar
- Rajiv Pratap Rudy, former minister and BJP spokesman from Bihar
