PM Modi in Palestine: The Prime Minister held a press statement with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off his four-day visit to Palestine, the UAE, and Oman on Friday. PM Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister on an official visit to Palestine. He arrived in Ramallah city, the headquarters of the Palestine National Authority, this afternoon and met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who has described the visit as "significant". Addressing a joint press briefing with President Abbas, PM Modi said "India hopes to see an independent Palestinian state soon, is committed to their well-being."

On Friday, PM Modi had met Jordan's King Abdullah II in Amman and said he had a "wonderful" meeting him. 

"Had a wonderful meeting with His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan. Our discussions today will give great strength to India-Jordan bilateral relations," PM Modi had tweeted after meeting the King.

In a special recognition of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's contribution to relations between India and Palestine, President Abbas conferred the Grand Collar of the State of Palestine on him after the conclusion of their bilateral meeting. Describing the Gulf and West Asia region was a "key priority" in India's external engagement, PM Modi ahead of his visit said his trip was aimed at strengthening ties with the region, news agency PTI reported. 

"This region is a key priority in our external engagement. We enjoy vibrant multi-dimensional ties with the countries here. I look forward to strengthening India's growing and important ties with West Asia and the Gulf region through the visit," PM Modi had said in his departure statement.

PM Modi is set to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at 11 am local time. Ahead of the visit, Mr Abbas was quoted as saying by news agency PTI, "We will discuss the recent updates with Prime Minister Modi, and the recent developments in the peace process, the bilateral relations, and the regional situations. And the possible role India can play in enhancing peace in the region, as well as discussing different economical aspects beyond the existing ties we already possess."

"The long Indian position of supporting the two-state solution is well known. India has supported the Palestinian cause throughout the years of conflict, and we rely on the Indian support in order to reach the independence of the Palestinian State," he mentioned.

Palestinian President Welcomes PM Modi 

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who met PM Modi in Delhi last year, has welcomed the Indian leader in what he has described as "a significant" visit by a "grand guest". He told news agency PTI that he would discuss the possible role India can play in enhancing peace in the region. "We believe in the importance of a possible Indian role... to reach a final agreement based on international consensus and resolutions, in which India and other countries can be part of," President Abbas said.
