Prime Minister Narendra Modi is hosting a summit with G4 leaders.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is holding a special summit with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Japanese PM Shinzo Abe and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff. The four leaders form what is known as the G-4 group - countries which back each other's bid for permanent seats at the UN Security Council, a powerful world body. India is making a strong bid for a permanent seat in an expanded Security Council.
Here are the highlights of the meeting:
I am delighted to welcome you all.
I especially want to thank PM Shinzo Abe who has just arrived in the US.
We live in a fundamentally different world from the time the UN was born.
The subject for reforms in the UN Security Council has been the focus of global attention for decades.
Unfortunately there has been no progress so far.
The reforms of the UN Security Council within a fixed timeframe has become urgent and important task.
Our group of four countries, G4 came together in 2004 bound by our shared commitment to global peace in prosperity.
I am delighted that we are meeting again as Heads of Government after ten years.
Climate change and terrorism are new concerns.
Cyber space are new frontiers of our challenges and opportunities.
However, this is just the first step.
We should aim to take this process to its logical conclusion during the 70th session.
I am confident that our meeting today will give a big impetus to our efforts in this direction.
