MPs' mock Parliament: Lalu is 'PM'

New Delhi: As angry MPs held up Parliament saying the salary hike just wasn't enough, the government passed two new bills without a discussion including the crucial Medical council bill and adjourned proceedings.

What happened then was unprecedented in the history of Indian parliament - angry Opposition members decided to hold a mock parliament with Gopinath Munde as Speaker and Lalu Prasad as Prime Minister.

"We all sat on a dharna, made Laluji our Prime Minister and Gopinath Munde our Speaker," said Akhilesh Yadav, Chief, Uttar Pradesh Samajwadi Party.

MPs debated the medical council bill as Munde presided, while Mulayam ensured everything functioned well.

Sources say the BJP leadership is not happy with their MPs taking part in the mock drill. After 40 minutes, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav even held a press conference.

"We reject the recommendation of the cabinet. I felt the same way as you would," said Lalu.

The Congress though is not amused. While a senior minister termed it as theatre of the absurd, others said the Opposition simply did not have the people's mandate. Jagdambika Pal, MP, Congress said, "this should not be done."
