I don't think Ishrat Jahan's was a fake encounter, Rajnath Singh to NDTV: Highlights

New Delhi: BJP president Rajnath Singh spoke to NDTV on why he believes there could be early general elections, on the controversial CBI chargesheet in the Ishrat Jahan case and the food ordinance bill. He also spoke about Narendra Modi.

Highlights of the interview:

  • We have said the possibility of snap polls cannot be ruled out. Govt has brought the food ordinance in a hurry, they have done this because they think there will be early polls.
  • We will ratify the Food Security Ordinance, but with amendments.
  • We would have let the House run if Ashwani Kumar and Pawan Bansal had resigned that time.
  • Govt has not been able to control fiscal deficit, current deficit. The rupee is continuously falling. Exports are not increasing.
  • Failures of the govt are increasing. They have failed all on all fronts.
  • On the Ishrat Jahan case: - My personal view is that it was not a fake encounter.
  • Narendra Modi does not believe in any kind of violence.
  • What can I do if Amit Shah's name keeps coming up in encounter cases. All matters are subjudice.
  • We believe there should not be any fake encounter.
  • The central government is politcising the Ishrat Jahan case - the result is that the Intelligence Bureau and the CBI are standing against each other.
  • LK Advani was never upset because of Narendra Modi's elevation. Advaniji knew Modiji will be elevated. The decision was taken after the consent of all senior leaders including Advaniji's.
  • Advaniji is our guardian.
  • On Sudheendra Kulkarni's critical piece on the BJP: I cannot comment on everybody's opinions.
  • There was never any divide within the BJP.
  • Ayodhya is not an election issue - it is a national issue.
  • There is no question of me being a PM candidate. I am the party president and for a party president, there is nothing bigger than winning the elections with a clear majority.
  • We will take a call on the PM candidate later.
