Shimla: After running an aggressive campaign in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, BJP claimed victory in both the states. Himachal Pradesh election was essentially viewed as a power tussle between Chief minister Virbhadra Singh and BJP's chief ministerial candidate Prem Kumar Dhumal. 

People of Himachal Pradesh have been alternating power between the BJP and Congress since 1985. The election, which took place on November 9, saw a record voter turnout of 74 per cent. An NDTV poll of eight exit polls had indicated that the BJP was set for a big win in the state, however, Congress had remained confident of victory.
