New Delhi: The statement on Kangana Ranaut that actor Hrithik Roshan released yesterday was as unexpected as it was long overdue. The 43-year-old star has been warring with his co-star from Kites and Krrish 3 for over a year-and-half now but his responses so far have been restricted to legal communication and lawyers' quotes. His statement, released on social media yesterday, is the first time Hrithik Roshan has addressed the controversy that has played out so publicly over the last few months. The concluding sentence of the statement - "... families suffer. Children suffer" - holds the clue to why Hrithik has now elected to present his case, reports mid-day.

Chief among his reasons for speaking up are Hrehaan and Hridhaan, Hrithik Roshan's young sons with ex-wife Sussanne Khan. The report in mid-day quotes an unnamed member of the Roshan family as saying, "Hrithik's family told him that enough was enough and now wasn't the time to keep silent. They all sat down and decided that Hrithik needed to take charge of the situation. If you read the last line of his statement, it mentions how children suffer if justice is denied. That is a very telling line. Does anybody have any idea what his children have gone through because of this circus?"

Kangana Ranaut's recent and extremely quote-worthy appearances on certain TV channels also goaded Hrithik Roshan into action, said mid-day's source. While promoting her film Simran, Kangana demanded apologies from Hrithik and his father Rakesh Roshan, saying they had 'made fools of themselves.'

The family member told mid-day, "Hrithik was insulted on Aap Ki Adalat. That affected him deeply. His family told him that if he doesn't speak up now, it will mean two things - either he is guilty or he is too weak to respond. Neither was the case, so why shouldn't he speak up?" Hrithik Roshan's intent is to preserve his own dignity, the source said.

Kangana Ranaut claims a past romance with Hrithik Roshan which he denies. She says he proposed to her in Paris and has offered what appears to be a photo of the them at a party as proof that they dated. He says the picture was photoshopped, that he's never met Kangana in private and that she sent him over 3,000 'one-sided' mails. Last year, Hrithik went to the police about an alleged 'imposter' he claimed was corresponding with Kangana; she complained that he was 'slut-shaming' her by circulating private pictures and videos.

Things escalated this week when it was reported that the Roshans had filed a 29-page police complaint against Kangana Ranaut accusing her of stalking Hrithik. Some of her emails, attached with the complaint, were accessed by news outlets and went viral.

In his statement, Hrithik Roshan has said he has been 'harassed by this for four years.' Read here:

Kangana Ranaut's sister Rangoli Chandel responded to the statement by tweeting a screenshot of an email allegedly sent to her sister by Hrithik. She also reposted the picture he claims was photoshopped, calling Hrithik a 'creep':

Rangoli previously described Hrithik as a 'stalker uncle' in a series of tweets earlier this week. Kangana Ranaut has not commented on Hrithik's statement yet.
