Bihar Election Result: 'Good Morning, We Are Winning,' Says Lalu Yadav

On the morning that Bihar election results are expected, Lalu Yadav made a rare appearance to speak to the media.

Patna: Just before counting began for the Bihar assembly election, Lalu Yadav exuded confidence that his Grand Alliance would win.

"Good morning to all. I had a good night's sleep, can't you see?" a smiling Mr Yadav told reporters at his home in Patna early in the morning.

Asked whether he predicted a victory for the alliance that combines his party, with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JDU and the Congress, the Rashtriya Janata Dal leader said: "We are winning, there is no doubt."

He cut off any further questions saying: "Let us see what happens, about the rest... we will speak in the evening."

Responding to his comments, BJP candidate Nitin Navin said: "He should be saying 'good night'."

On the last day of voting in Bihar, Mr Yadav had said that that the Grand Alliance would win 190 of the 243 seats.

He also asserted that even if his party won more seats, Nitish Kumar would be the chief ministerial candidate.

"Nitish was and is our candidate for Chief Minister.  Even if the RJD gets more seats, Nitish will be Chief Minister" said Lalu.

NDTV's exit poll showed the Grand Alliance winning 110 seats.

The exit poll with a massive sample size of 76,000 people in all constituencies, showed the BJP and its three regional allies winning the state with 125 seats, three more than required in the 243-member Bihar assembly to form government.

Bihar delivered a record voter turnout of nearly 57 per cent as compared to about 53 per cent in the last state election in 2010.
