India's passenger vehicle market continued its strong momentum in February 2026, with SUVs and compact cars once again dominating the charts. Leading automakers such as Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Mahindra reported healthy numbers, reflecting sustained demand across categories.

At the top of the list was the Tata Nexon, which retained its crown as the country's best-selling car. With 19,430 units sold, the Nexon not only led overall passenger vehicle sales but also reaffirmed its position as the highest-selling SUV in India. Close behind was the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, recording 19,326 units, showing the compact sedan's continued popularity among both fleet operators and private buyers.

The Tata Punch followed with 18,748 units, securing its place as the second-best SUV in the market. The Punch recently received a mid-cycle update, adding fresh appeal with design and feature enhancements. Together, the Nexon and Punch highlight Tata Motors' strong grip on the SUV segment.

In the midsize SUV category, the Hyundai Creta maintained its steady run with 17,938 units, continuing its long-standing dominance. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza was next with 17,863 units, while the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga MPV posted 17,807 units, proving its consistent demand among family buyers.

Hatchbacks also contributed significantly to overall volumes. The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R registered 14,885 units, narrowly ahead of the Maruti Suzuki Swift, which sold 14,833 units. Both models remain reliable choices for urban buyers.

Mahindra's Scorpio, with 14,665 units, showcased the enduring appeal of SUVs with strong road presence and utility. Rounding off the top ten was the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, which achieved 14,632 units, continuing to lead the premium hatchback space against rivals like the Hyundai i20, Toyota Glanza, and Tata Altroz.

Overall, February 2026 highlighted the growing preference for SUVs and compact cars in India. Tata Motors' Nexon and Punch stood out as clear leaders, while Maruti Suzuki maintained strong positions across multiple segments. Hyundai and Mahindra also reinforced their presence with consistent performers.
