Horrific… this is exactly why it's said to drive slow in the hills, because one small mistake can turn into something devastating in seconds. A car fell into a deep gorge, and 2 lives were lost. Wish there were barriers, maybe those lives could have been saved.

What Happened?
The accident occurred on a rather sharp turn, where the car veered off the highway, launched into the air, and fell into a deep gorge, which is reported to be around 200 meters deep. Based on the footage, the driver of the Maruti Suzuki Dzire lost control after what seems to be a tyre burst. After the loss of steering control, the airbags in the car seemed to have been inflated, which worsened the situation. Eventually, the car ended up falling into the gorge and reportedly caught fire upon impact, trapping the occupants inside.

Conversation Around Road Safety
This incident has reignited public conversation regarding the prevalence of vulnerable road stretches in Himachal Pradesh and the absence of adequate guardrails. Authorities have previously acknowledged the need for infrastructure improvements, noting that while mountainous terrain presents inherent risks, the lack of structural barriers significantly increases the severity of accidents when a driver loses control.

Road safety experts emphasize that in regions with steep gradients and sharp turns, crash barriers act as a critical last line of defense, designed to absorb impact and prevent vehicles from leaving the roadway. It is also essential for the drivers to be extra cautious when driving on mountain roads.
Vehicle Maintenance
Before embarking on a long journey, it's important to inspect your vehicle thoroughly. Drivers should check the tyre pressure, engine oil, coolant levels, brakes, and other essential components. By performing these basic checks, you can help prevent minor issues that could potentially lead to serious accidents.
