Do not accept money from parties and cast votes: Collector

Madurai: District Collector U Sahayam today asked people not to accept money from political parties and cast their votes, saying it was not good for democracy.

"It is the duty of the voter to vote without taking money from any party," he said speaking at a function at Lady Doak College on "voting is a fundamental right", where he reminded students that the Election Commission was campaigning on the need to vote.

Regretting that corruption had spread like a cancer in society, he said election was the time when values should be inculcated and students were of the right age group to inculcate values.

"We officials believe today's students will be officials of tomorrow. Government officials should be fair and honest. That is what they are paid for. Unfortunately corruption is deep rooted in society. Youngsters should change it and it is their duty to do so," he said.
