Nagapattinam:
Thousands of people witnessed the annual bullock cart race at Thirukkadaiyur in the district today in connection with 'Kaanum Pongal' festival.
A large number of carts from the city and neighbouring districts participated in the race,held in various categories.
In addition,over 30 horse carts also participated in the race.
The carts were flagged off at 8.00 hrs from Thillayadi Valliyammai memorial arch by Poompuhar MLA Paunraj at Thirukkadaiyur and covered 10 km to Tarangambadi.
Vehicular traffic along the route was diverted through Thillaiyadi throughout the day. Ambulances with medical teams
had been kept ready at many points to cater to emergencies.
Apart from the cart races, beaches in this town, Vailankanni, Karaikal, Tarangambadi and Poompuhar attracted huge crowds in view of Kaanum Pongal.
Tamil Nadu State Transport corporation had arranged for special buses to these places.
