Dengue Outbreak: Precautions for Children

Consulting a doctor and taking a blood test are the fest steps to tackle dengue.

The death of two children from dengue who were allegedly denied treatment by top hospitals has jolted the Delhi government into action as the city faces the worst dengue crisis in five years. Doctors say parents need to take extra care as children are more vulnerable.

Here's what parents need to do:

  1. Children are more vulnerable as they tend to lose body fluids quickly. Any child with symptoms of dengue should drink plenty of water.

  2. Any child who has fever should be monitored for at least 3 to 4 days.

  3. Children should go outdoors only in long-sleeve clothes. The Delhi government has even issued a directive, asking that students should go to school only in full-sleeve uniforms.

  4. Parents should not give any medication to the children without consulting a doctor. Paracetamol, aspirin, brufen-baed medicines are strongly advised against.

  5. Initially, a battery of tests is not required but a complete blood test should be taken.
