A tourist visiting Florence has been charged after damaging the city's historic Fountain of Neptune by climbing onto the centuries‑old monument in what authorities described as a pre‑wedding challenge. The incident occurred in Piazza della Signoria, one of Florence's most prominent public squares, and resulted in damage estimated at €5,000 (₹5,53,090), according to city officials.

On April 18, the 28‑year‑old woman, whose nationality has not been disclosed, was spotted by municipal police as she climbed over a protective barrier surrounding the fountain. Officers intervened quickly and escorted her away from the monument before further harm could occur.

City Council Details The Incident

According to an official statement issued by Florence's city council, the tourist told police she had been dared by friends to touch the statue's private parts as part of a pre‑wedding prank. To avoid stepping into the water, she climbed directly onto the marble horses that form part of the fountain's base.

“Her intention was to ‘touch' the private parts of the statue for a sort of pre‑wedding challenge,” the statement said.

After inspection by specialists from the Fabbrica di Palazzo Vecchio, the body responsible for maintaining the site, it was found that “minor but significant damage” was caused to the horses' legs and to a decorative frieze that the tourist had grabbed to keep from slipping.

Legal Consequences

The woman has been reported to judicial authorities for defacing an artistic and architectural heritage asset. Officials stressed that she is presumed innocent until a final judgment is made.

The Fountain of Neptune, created by sculptor Bartolomeo Ammannati in the 16th century, was commissioned in 1559 by Cosimo I de' Medici to commemorate a royal marriage. It remains one of Florence's most recognisable landmarks and a focal point for tourists.

However, this is not the first time the fountain has suffered damage. In 2005, authorities installed surveillance cameras after a visitor climbed the monument and broke Neptune's hand. In 2023, a German tourist caused similar damage while attempting a selfie.

Florence officials have warned that stunts involving historic monuments are becoming increasingly common. Giorgio Caselli, who heads the city council's fine arts office, told The Guardian that climbing monuments as part of challenges reflects a growing lack of respect for cultural heritage.
