The Ministry of Tourism (MoT) has announced a collaboration with Netflix to highlight India's cultural and natural diversity through on-screen storytelling. The initiative will showcase destinations across the country that appear in Netflix productions, and encourage viewers to visit India's landscapes, traditions and communities.

How Will The Ministry Of Tourism Work With Netflix?

Under the partnership, the Ministry and Netflix will identify opportunities to feature Indian locations in upcoming productions and work to ensure those places are presented authentically and with context. The MoT says the idea is to present locations in ways that reflect their history, local practices and economic importance to nearby communities.

Several existing Netflix titles already offer glimpses of India's varied geography - from the Nilgiri forests in The Elephant Whisperers and the Andaman Islands in Kaala Paani, to the fields of Punjab in Amar Singh Chamkila, the streets of Rajasthan in Mismatched, and the hills of Kalimpong in Jaane Jaan.

Series And Films Often Inspire Travel

Globally, films and television series have a track record of prompting viewers to plan trips to the places they see on screen. Shows such as Emily in Paris have translated into higher interest in the locations they feature, and recent Netflix releases have shown similar effects. One of the current Netflix series cited in coverage is When Life Gives You Tangerines.

The Ministry of Tourism's partnership with Netflix follows this global trend, using storytelling on a major streaming platform to encourage audiences to visit India.

Netflix's Collaborations With Tourism Boards Overseas

Netflix has worked with tourism boards and government agencies in a number of countries, including France, Indonesia, Korea, Thailand, Spain, Brazil and Greece, to highlight filming locations. The Ministry has described this as Netflix's first partnership with a tourism body in South Asia.

Monika Shergill, Vice President, Content, Netflix India, said the partnership would help create opportunities for local talent and communities while sharing stories rooted in India's diverse landscapes.

Over the past decade, Netflix says it has filmed in more than 100 cities across 23 states in India, covering small towns, forests and urban centres. Many of these locations have since attracted attention for their cinematic appeal, drawing interest from both domestic and international visitors.

By linking tourism with storytelling on a global platform, the Ministry of Tourism hopes to strengthen India's appeal as a filming location and as a destination for travellers.
