Travelling between Punjab and West Bengal is set to get easier with the launch of the new Amritsar-New Jalpaiguri Amrit Bharat Express. The commercial run of the train is expected to begin soon, giving passengers a new long-distance rail option between the two regions.

The new service will connect Amritsar in Punjab with New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in West Bengal. The train will run through key cities and towns across Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, including Gorakhpur and Forbesganj.

Built by Chennai's Integral Coach Factory (ICF), the Amrit Bharat Express has been designed as a more affordable alternative for regular travellers. While it offers several modern features similar to the Vande Bharat Express, the focus here is on comfort at a lower price point. The service mainly targets lower- and lower-middle income passengers looking for better long-distance travel options.

Weekly Service Between Amritsar And NJP

The train will operate as numbers 14664 and 14663. According to the Railway Board's letter dated May 11, 2026, the service will run once a week. Train number 14664 will leave Amritsar every Thursday, while train number 14663 will depart from New Jalpaiguri every Saturday.

As per the schedule, the Amritsar-bound train from NJP will leave at 08:00 hrs on Saturday and reach Amritsar at 02:20 hrs on Monday. Meanwhile, the train from Amritsar will depart at 12:45 hrs every Thursday and arrive in New Jalpaiguri at 04:15 hrs on Saturday.

The train will stop at 35 stations during the journey. Major stoppages include Jalandhar City, Ludhiana, Ambala Cantt, Saharanpur, Moradabad, Bareilly, Sitapur, Gonda, Barhni, Gorakhpur, Narkatiaganj, Raxaul, Sitamarhi, Forbesganj, Arariya, Bagdogra, and Siliguri.

Rail travellers from Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh are also expected to benefit from the new route, especially because the train passes through several smaller towns that usually have limited direct long-distance connectivity.

Focus On Affordable Long-Distance Travel

The Amrit Bharat Express has been gaining attention as Indian Railways expands its non-premium modern train network. With this new Amritsar-NJP route, passengers heading towards the hills of West Bengal or Punjab's major cities may soon have a more comfortable and budget-friendly option on the tracks.
