Sri Lanka is a one-stop destination that offers it all - golden beaches, lush green landscapes, wild safaris and ancient temples. Known as the teardrop of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka may be small in size, but it is big on experiences. Recently, the country expanded its visa-free travel policy from 7 to 40 countries. Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said that the move comes as part of its efforts to boost tourism and recover from an economic crisis, reported PTI.
Visa-Free Travel Countries
The free visa regime has already been in place for nationals of China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia and Japan since March 2023.
The countries that are now part of the expanded list of 40 include the UK, the US, Canada, Pakistan, Iran, Norway, South Korea, Sweden, Austria, Finland, Denmark, the United Arab Emirates and Australia. Other countries include Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Poland, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, France, the Czech Republic, Italy, Switzerland, Israel, Belarus, Sweden, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, New Zealand, Kuwait and Turkiye.

Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister On Visa-Free Travel Policy
According to PTI, the country might incur a loss of approximately USD 66 million annually due to the waiver of visa fees. However, even though they may be losing this money directly, they believe more tourists will now visit Sri Lanka since entering is easier and cheaper.
The visa-free travel policy will help the country bring in more tourists. Mr Herath said, "We have stabilised the economy, and through policy changes in tourism, we aim to ensure steady growth in arrivals."
