How Is The Safety Index Calculated?

The data is derived from surveys answered by Numbeo website visitors, structured similarly to established scientific and governmental surveys. The Safety Index is essentially the inverse of the Crime Index, which takes into account survey responses about:

  • General perception of crime levels
  • Perceived safety during daylight and nighttime
  • Concerns about specific crimes (mugging, robbery, car theft, physical attacks, public harassment, and bias-motivated incidents)
  • Property crime severity (burglary, theft, vandalism)
  • Violent crime severity (assault, homicide, sexual offences)

A city with a high Safety Index is considered very safe, be it for citizens or tourists.
