Dam safety bogey bid to sway panel: AIADMK

Chennai: Strongly condemning the Kerala government for spreading panic and rumours among the public about the safety of the Mullaperiyar dam, the AIADMK on Friday said such actions went against the spirit of the Constitution and that they were not in the interests of both states.

A memorandum submitted by AIADMK MPs to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at New Delhi said the recent actions of Kerala insisting on the construction of a new dam alleging that the Mullaperiyar dam was unsafe, was tantamount to violating the order of the Supreme Court.

"The Kerala government knows fully well that the dam is safe... However, it has realised that it does not have any scientific data to prove that the dam is unsafe and is resorting to spreading panic and rumours...," the memo said and added that the recent action of the Kerala government in raising the bogey of dam safety appeared to be an attempt to influence the Empowered Committee in submitting its report to the Supreme Court based on fear psychosis.

The delegation also requested Dr Singh to ban the film Dam999 across the country as it had been causing overwhelming fear and panic among the people and jeopardising public order by its rabble rousing tendencies.

Besides, Kerala should be advised to honour the rights guaranteed to the Tamil Nadu under the 1886 agreement followed by supplemental agreements of 1970 regarding the Mullaperiyar dam in letter and spirit, the delegation urged the PM.
