Students' Federation wants probes into college suicides

Puducherry: The Students' Federation of India's (SFI) Puducherry unit staged a demonstration asking the territorial administration to hold an immediate judicial probe into "continued occurrence of incidents of suicides" by the students of privately managed professional colleges.

The demonstrators said that the government should set up a committee under the Chairmanship of a retired judge.

Referring to the alleged suicide by a final year girl student from Tirupati in the hostel room of a private medical college last week, the SFI said that the college management should return all the fees collected from her.

The government should not ignore its responsibility in keeping vigil on private colleges.

Former Education Minister K Lakshminarayanan said that there should be a separate legislation in Puducherry to handle the private colleges so that students of these colleges could have proper environs for doing their courses.
