1 Person Dead, 13 Children Injured In Cylinder Explosion At School in Kalyan Near Mumbai

The vendor was hired to fill balloons for Arya Gurukul School's annual sports day function

Mumbai:

A balloon vendor died and 13 students were injured after a cylinder used for filling gas in balloons exploded during a function at a school in Kalyan area near Mumbai, police said.

The vendor was hired to fill balloons for Arya Gurukul School's annual sports day function, school authorities said.

"The man was filling the balloons with gas when suddenly the cylinder exploded this afternoon. The impact was so powerful that the victim was blown away in the blast and died on the spot," said Sanjay Jadha, Deputy Commissioner of Police.

“My 4-year-old child Priyanshu Pandey has sustained injuries on his head and hands. He has been sent for treatment,” a worried parent told NDTV.

The police and fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot and the injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital, the police said.

The doctors said that the children are out of danger.  The deceased is yet to be identified, the police said.
