Mumbai: A filmmaker in Mumbai was today convicted and sentenced to five years in jail for throwing a 'corrosive chemical' on his former girlfriend in 2012.

The victim, Aryanka Hosbetkar, deposed in the court and identified Jerrit John as the person who threw the chemical on her.

"The court also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on Jerrit John, which will be paid to the victim," said Public Prosecutor Kalpana Chavan.

Jerrit John had thrown the chemical at 26-year-old Ms Hosbetkar - who is an international cyclist - in 2012 at her residence at Adarsh Colony in Worli, Mumbai, reportedly after a quarrel.

46-year-old Jerrit John, owner of production house No Nonsense, had committed the crime in the presence of Ms Hosbetkar's mother and friends. Ms Hosbetkar was treated and discharged by a hospital a few days after the incident.

The two were in a relationship since 10 months before the incident. Ms Hosbetkar had ended ties with him after learning that he was a married man and had a five-year-old son.

Jerrit John was arrested on November 11, 2012, and has been in jail since then. He was booked under sections 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 379 (theft), 341 (wrongful restraint), 452 (trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint). The police later charged him for attempt to murder as well but he was not convicted for this.
