Mumbai:
Dawood Ibrahim, one of India's most-wanted criminals, is expected to join his family via Skype today as they celebrate the wedding of his nephew to the daughter of a Mumbai businessman.
Ibrahim's nephew, Alishah Parkar, is the son of the gangster's sister, Haseena Parkar, who died two years ago and was a senior member of his mafia.
The wedding or
nikaah will be held with 15 relatives at a mosque. Among those expected to attend is Dawood's brother, Iqbal Kaskar, who was arrested last year on charges of extortion and assault and was later given bail.
Dawood fled India after he was accused of funding and orchestrating 1993's communal riots in Mumbai.
Sources close to the family say they've been told that Dawood, 60, who resides in Karachi in Pakistan, will watch the ceremony on Skype. Dawood fled India after he was accused of funding and orchestrating 1993's communal riots in Mumbai in which 257 people were killed and more than 700 injured. He still controls D Company, a crime syndicate with vast businesses in murder, extortion and weapons-smuggling.
At night, a grand reception has been planned at a five-star hotel in Juhu. "Over a dozen Mumbai police personnel will keep a close watch on the proceedings to see if any underworld elements attend the function," said an unnamed senior police officer to
mid-day.com, adding, "Constables in plainclothes will not only keep vigil, but will even jot down the details of cars at the reception."
