The effects depends on the type of thyroid condition you have. Common thyroid conditions are hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism and postpartum thyroiditis. It also depends on whether the condition is an auto-immune condition, or has other causes, such as iodine deficiency.
1. Hypothyroidism
Most often, women with hypothyroidism, who may have needed higher levels of medication (levothyroxine) during pregnancy, go back to pre-pregnancy thyroid levels after their baby is born. However, about 50 percent of women with a particular form of hypothyroidism known as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, may find that they need a higher dose of medication after their baby is born. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is caused by an auto-immune condition in which the thyroid gland attacks itself. This auto-immune condition typically flares up during the postnatal period.
2. Hyperthyroidism
Hyperthyroidism is thought to affect 2 in 1000 women during pregnancy. The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is an auto-immune condition called Graves' disease. Women who had mild hyperthyroidism before, becoming pregnant may find that pregnancy makes their symptoms temporarily better, especially during the second and third trimesters. This is because pregnancy itself can suppress the action of the thyroid gland. Some women with mild hyperthyroidism may, therefore, be able to stop medication in the third trimester, but their symptoms may come back shortly after giving birth.
