Health Advisory
The Amarnath Yatra involves trekking at a high altitude of approximately 15,000 feet. Hence, high altitude sickness is quite common. Do not hesitate to reach out for medical help if there are symptoms like nausea, vomiting, fatigue, lightheadedness, dizziness, loss of appetite, visual impairment, bladder-bowel dysfunction, chest tightness, rapid breathing and increased heart rate.
Precautions
1. Take active steps to improve your physical fitness by executing morning or evening walks for 4-5 km daily, at least a month before the Yatra. Deep breathing exercises like yoga might improve oxygen efficiency in the body.
2. Make sure to walk slowly while ascending the steep inclines and take breaks as and when required. Drink at least 5 litres of water to combat headaches and dehydration. Also, consume ample carbohydrates to lower the symptoms of fatigue and prevent low blood sugar levels.
3. Prior to travelling get a medical check up done. Consult with the physician about medicines you take if any and whether they pose any risk during the journey. If possible carry portable oxygen.
Travel Guide
1. Pack your bags with sufficient woollen clothing as temperatures can drop below 5 degrees Celsius at any moment. The clothes and eatables must be kept in waterproof bags.
2. Always carry an umbrella, raincoat and waterproof shoes as the weather is likely to be unpredictable. Do not wear slippers as the steep slopes can cause accidents. Wear sneakers or good-grip boots.
3. Wear comfortable clothing during the yatra.
4. Remember to bring your identity card, or driving license and Yatra permit. Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC) is a mandate.
