Women groups protest against Tiwari

Hyderabad: Women organisations staged protests near the Raj Bhavan here today demanding that the
Centre should recall Andhra Pradesh Governor N D Tiwari immediately over his alleged involvement in a sex scandal.

The Women groups, holding placards and raising slogans against Tiwari, made an attempt to march towards Raj Bhavan but where prevented by the police, which acted swiftly.

V Sandhya, president of the Progressive Organisation of Women demanded the resignation of the Governor owing moral responsibility.

"He has brought disgrace to the sacred office of the governor. He should either resign on his own or the Centre should remove him," he said.

Punjagutta police said as many as 60 women activists belonging to various organisations were taken into preventive custody.

Police deployed additional forces around Raj Bhavan to prevent untoward incidents. Roads leading to Raj Bhavan have been barricaded.

There were widespread protests across the state after ABN Andhra Jyothi news channel aired explicit clippings of an elderly man purported to be 86-year-old Tiwari with three young women in bed.

The Raj Bhavan approached the Andhra Pradesh High Court with a petition and got an order restraining the channel from further airing the footage, which was allegedly taken inside Raj Bhavan (Governor House). The matter has been posted to December 30 for hearing.

The channel quoted Radhika, a woman from Uttarakhand, as saying that she sent the young women to Raj Bhavan on Tiwari's request through his aide.
