New Delhi: Liquor baron Vijay Mallya's Twitter account appeared to be hacked on Friday morning by a group calling themselves "legion" the same name posted by those who hacked Rahul Gandhi's account last week.

This morning, a series of abusive and threatening tweets emerged on the timeline of Mr Mallya, who squeezed in his own tweets saying: "My account has been hacked by someone called Legion who are tweeting now in my name. Simply ignore. Will fix this," and "Outfit called Legion has hacked my e-mail accounts and are blackmailing me!! What a joke."

The hackers posted what they claimed were details of his wealth, his properties, investments, phone numbers and passwords.

"The bank accounts, assets, passports, offshore investments of Mallya can be found at -- http://ge.tt/23DUlmh2," said one tweet.

"Support Legion. We will bring you the info needed to bring these criminals to justice!" said another.

--(These tweets have now been removed on Mr Mallya's Twitter account)--

Last week, the Congress suspended over 200 of its leaders' accounts after its number 2 leader Rahul Gandhi's account was hacked. The party's server was also broken into.

Mr Mallya, 60, has been in London since March after making a quiet exit from the country amid attempts by a group of banks to recover unpaid loans to the collapsed Kingfisher Airlines.

India has been making attempts to bring back the businessman, who has been declared a proclaimed offender by a Mumbai court in connection with a Rs 900-crore loan from IDBI bank.

To recover some of the money owed to it, the State Bank has tried to auction Mr Mallya's property.
