Terror alert sounded in Kochi

Kochi: Security has been tightened in Kochi after the Home Ministry's alert about a possible Lashkar terror strike.

Commandos have been posted at the historic Jewish Synagogue at Mattancherry in Kerala, the oldest place of worship of the Jewish community in the Commonwealth region and St Francis church at Fort Kochi.

Commandos have also been deployed in the city and a Quick Reaction Team of Kerala police has also been sent to Kochi.

On Friday, Kerala police sounded a high alert in Kochi following an intelligence input from the Home Ministry.

The Kochi Police Commissioner, Manoj Abraham told NDTV that security has been tightened across the city and a high alert has been sounded in the city. Patrolling has been intensified in and around vital installations especially naval base.

When contacted, Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan told PTI in Thiruvananthapuram that the state DGP received some information from the Centre and steps have been taken on that basis.

High alert machinery has been put on active mode following the receipt of the information, sources said.

The security at the nearby Nedumbassery International Airport and coastal surveillance had been increased, they said.

The Kadaloram Jagratta samitis, a committee of fishermen, have been asked to be on the lookout for any suspicious movements on the coastal stretches.

The Centre had recently put on alert Bangalore, Mumbai and Union territory of Puducherry about possible terror attacks. (With PTI inputs)
