Vijaywada:
After the case of primary school students who were punished for speaking in Telugu, a student of class ten in a school near Vijaywada committed suicide, allegedly because she was being taunted by her teachers for not doing well in her studies.
Fifteen year-old G Nagarani had this to say, a few hours before she died on Tuesday evening. "Why do you come to school when you don't study well at all. Why don't you stay at home and do some work, my teacher would say. This kind of harassment is going on for many days."
The tenth class student of a private school near Vijayawada died after she consumed pesticide on Tuesday afternoon, allegedly unable to deal with the academic pressure.
Her mother, Sumathi says, "Two teachers are making her to stand outside the class for not studying properly."
The school management though, says they cannot be blamed. "Those students who are not studying well, we asked them to bring their parents. We explained to them what the problem is. There is no harassment," says Sauryulu the school's Principal.
The police is interrogating the teachers at the school to ascertain if pressure mounted by them forced Nagarani to take the extreme step.
