Seven Arrested For Clash in West Bengal, Remanded to Five-Days Police Custody

Bhangor, West Bengal: Four more persons were arrested in connection with yesterday's clash between two factions of the Trinamool Congress at Bhangor in South 24-Parganas district, taking the number of persons nabbed to seven, police said today.

All seven accused were produced in the SDJM's court at Baruipur and remanded to five days' police custody.

Two people were killed in the clash that took place yesterday at Deota village in Bhangor, which is a Trinamool Congress (TMC) stronghold and the local gram panchayat is also controlled by the party.

Among those arrested since yesterday were Baonta gram panchayat pradhan Panchu Gopal Mondal, police said.

One Bapan Mondal was gunned down by some people, following which the rival group shot dead Rajesh Mondal in retaliation during the clash.

Villagers and opposition Communist Party of India(Marxist) or CPI(M) claimed that the intra-party clash took place because of a rivalry over control of the local panchayat.

The Opposition alleged that panchayat chief Panchu Mondal had been removed by the group claiming allegiance to TMC leader Arabul Islam.
