The government has hit back at Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi's charge that Home Minister Amit Shah ordered firing at the student protesters in Delhi last week.

Minister of State in PMO Jitendra Singh lashed out at Rahul Gandhi saying he lacked administrative knowledge. 

Contesting Gandhi's claim that Amit Shah ordered police to fire at the protesters, Singh said that only a magistrate or an SDM can give such an order.

"Leader of Opposition has no idea of how administration works. Orders to open fire in any situation can only be given by a magistrate and not by any minister," Singh said in the Lok Sabha.

The Rajya Sabha passed the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The legislation extends statutory protection to Vande Mataram.

"Only magistrate can order firings, a Minister does not have that right," MP Jitendra Singh said countering Rahul Gandhi's "firing" order charge against Home Minister Amit Shah.

Union ministers are demanding an apology as Rahul Gandhi targeted the RSS and Amit Shah during his address in Lok Sabha.

"Our education system is cruel; there is rampant privatisation. The soul of the system is captured by the RSS," said Rahul Gandhi in Lok Sabha.

"Students are really irritated about not being allowed to follow their passion, to ask questions they want to," he added.

Rahul Gandhi has resumed his speech after the Speaker assured that his "unparliamentary word" will be purged.

Lok Sabha is witnessing a fresh uproar, with Kiren Rijiju alleging that Rahul Gandhi has used an "unparliamentary word" in his speech. Speaker Om Birla is trying to defuse the situation.

"If the BJP leaders asked their children, they would've said they agree with their brothers and children on streets," said Rahul Gandhi on the student protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).

"I would like to say that I was very excited and reassured by what the future of this country did on our streets," said Rahul Gandhi in Lok Sabha while praising student protests.

"This was not anger, violence or hatred, but a deep expression of the youth of this country, of the future generation of this country," he added.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has begun his speech in Lok Sabha.

Rajya Sabha proceedings have been adjourned till 2 pm amid uproar.

Union Minister JP Nadda described the police swoop on Communist Party of India (Marxist)'s office in Delhi on Tuesday as a "normal law and order situation" and accused the opposition of "politicising and sensationalising" the police action.

CPM Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas raised the issue of police raid at the party office in the House on Wednesday. 

A Delhi Police team on Tuesday allegedly attempted to take CPM Student Wing SFI's Delhi Secretary and former JNU Students' Union president Aishe Ghosh into custody from party's AKG Bhavan office in an older case. The police action led to argument between the police and the CPM leaders after which the polcie team left AKG Bhavan without Aishe Ghosh.

"It was a very normal law and order situation that we have to understand. Police acted to maintain the order," Nadda said in the Rajya Sabha, adding that "any student who is into activism will have to face such a situation."

Rajya Sabha proceedings have been adjourned till 12 noon amid the opposition's protest over Delhi Police entering the CPI (M) office.

Opposition members protested in the Lok Sabha to press for Home Minister Amit Shah's response on the police action against student protesters, disrupting proceedings soon after the House met.

Speaker Om Birla urged the members to let the Question Hour continue, but with the opposition refusing to budge, he adjourned the House proceedings till 12 pm.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has slammed Congress leaders for not speaking on the anti-paper leak bill and said they "engaged in politics".

"Today, we hope that Rahul Gandhi and others will speak on the bill. A discussion on such a crucial bill is underway, yet they seek to divert attention and politicise the issue by talking about unrelated matters," he told reporters outside Parliament.

Leaders of the INDIA bloc from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha are scheduled to meet at the office of Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge in Parliament to chalk out their strategy for the ongoing Monsoon Session.

The Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026, is set to be introduced in the Lok Sabha today.

Under this bill, approval from a District Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, or Executive Magistrate will be mandatory for birth and death registrations delayed by one to two years. For delays exceeding two years, the matter will be referred to a court, requiring an order from a judicial magistrate of the first class.

To prevent fraud, officials will conduct thorough verification before processing any delayed registrations.

Birth and death records from across the country are being digitised and integrated into a central database - which will be linked with Aadhaar cards, voter lists, ration cards, and passports.

The birth certificate will serve as the primary document for school admissions, obtaining a driving license, and applying for government jobs. Citizens will be able to easily obtain these certificates online.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to introduce the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha today, as per the revised list of business for the day.

The government will also bring the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, for consideration and passing. This will be moved by Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.

A brand new BJP vs Congress flashpoint erupted Tuesday in Parliament after Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra described a member of the Centre's newly constituted education reform panel as a "cow urine expert", prompting strong objections from BJP MPs, including Anurag Thakur.

The controversy unfolded during the debate on 'The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026', as the Congress MP questioned the government's approach to overhauling India's examination system following the National Testing Agency (NTA) crisis.

Although she did not name anyone directly, her remarks were widely interpreted as referring to Professor V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, who is among the six domain experts appointed to a "high-powered" task force announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to recommend reforms aimed at making public examinations leakproof.

Making a passionate argument for not just punishing those guilty of paper leaks but overhauling the system to ensure an entire year of a student's life does not depend on one examination attempt, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday reminded his Parliament colleagues that an aspirant walking into an exam hall carries the hopes of an entire family with him.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha during the debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, which seeks to enhance punishments for paper leaks, the Thiruvananthapuram MP said the ambition must be to prevent such incidents from happening in the first place.

"We are here because the system is broken and we must fix it. Every year, millions of Indians sit for examinations like NEET, UGC-Net, JEE. They don't just carry an admit card into the exam hall, they carry years of hard work, sleepless nights, the hopes of entire families. Behind them are parents who exhaust their savings on coaching and books. Mothers and fathers who actually put their own needs aside so their child can have one more chance. And students who leave the comfort of their homes, often at a very young age, to spend years in unfamiliar cities chasing a single opportunity," Tharoor said.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has criticised the opposition parties for "politicising" the issue of competitive examinations paper leaks.

Speaking to reporters after Parliament was adjourned at midnight, Rijiju said, "We have just left Parliament at 12 AM... The opposition parties did not speak on the bill itself. They politicised the issue. In contrast, everyone from the NDA who spoke addressed the bill... NDA MPs participated very constructively. Unfortunately, those who spoke from the Congress side focused largely on political matters unrelated to the bill. However, the fact that Parliament continued late into the night is a positive thing."
