The British Board of Film Classification has cleared Sanjay Leela Bhansali's
Padmavati for release in the UK , but the producers of the film have said they will wait for India's censor board, Central Board of Film Certification's nod before screening the film in British theatres. The release of the controversial film has been deferred by the producers in India, in light of protest by Rajput groups who allege that the film "distortion of history". So far, three BJP-ruled states have banned the film from being released. Chief Ministers of all three states, as well as Congress-ruled Punjab's Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, have come out in support of those protesting against the film.

An education officer in Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh had issued a circular banning a song from the period drama from being played at cultural programmes in schools. The circular directed the principals and head masters of all government and private schools to stop using the film's song, titled 'Ghoomar', during cultural programmes in their respective institutions.
