Omar Abdullah Meets Governor, Talks Of Fresh Elections

  • Delhi visit Mehbooba ji's last ditch effort to save PDP: Omar Abdullah.
  • If she doesn't form government, her party will split, he added.
  • Should have fresh polls if BJP, PDP can't resolve differences, he said.
Jammu: As PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti's headed for Delhi today in a signal of fresh hopes of continuing talks with the BJP on government formation in Jammu and Kashmir, her arch-rival, National Conference chief Omar Abdullah, met Governor NN Vohra.

"If the BJP and the PDP do not come together, I think the Governor should dissolve the assembly and have fresh elections," he told the media after the meeting.  "The governor himself is waiting for someone to come and take responsibility."

Taking a dig at the PDP, he said, "Mehbooba ji went to Delhi, secretly met Amit Shah. Everyone said the talks were positive but nothing really happened after that."

"I think rushing to Delhi is Mehbooba Mufti's last ditch effort to save her party because she realises if she does not form the government on the terms and conditions set by BJP, her party will split and if her party splits then she will be in a much weaker position than she is today. So she is trying to save her party," Mr Abdullah added.

Earlier today, Mr Abdullah had tweeted:

For more than two months since the death of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Jammu and Kashmir has been under Governor's Rule.

Ms Mufti, who was expected to succeed her father, has kept everyone guessing.

The alliance between the PDP and the BJP had stalled following her demands for a written assurance that the BJP will adhere to the Agenda of Alliance.

Last week, when a meeting with BJP president Amit Shah failed to yield a breakthrough, top PDP leaders said there was little hope of the two parties bridging the gap coming together to form government together.

Ms Mufti had returned to Srinagar.

Her decision to visit Delhi today came after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's  yesterday's statement that the BJP was "fully committed" to the Agenda of Alliance signed with the PDP.
