Nayagarh:

A teenager in Odisha tried to reach into a crevice to collect honey from a beehive. What followed is the stuff nightmares are made of.

For eight agonising hours, the boy had his head stuck between the rock surfaces, staring at death every minute. Because with him in that cramped space was a venomous snake.

The boy, identified as Shiba Pradhan, had gone to the Kanipada forest in Nayagarh district with his uncle to collect honey on Wednesday. While they were doing so, Pradhan spotted hives inside a crevice and reached in.

Pradhans head got stuck inside the crevice when he attempted to reach a hive that was located deep inside. His uncle tried to free him and then called villagers and family members for help. When everything failed, the police were informed.

Two teams of police and firefighters from Odagaon and Nayagarh reached the spot. "The rescue operation was hampered because a large venomous snake was in the crevice with him," an official said.

"Pradhan was rescued after eight hours and was handed over to his family. He did not suffer any major injuries," he added.
