TVK Vijay Rally Karur Stampede LIVE Updates: Thirty-nine people, including nine children and 17 women, were killed in a stampede at actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay's rally in Tamil Nadu's Karur. The crowd swelled and became uncontrollable when Vijay was addressing the gathering, and a number of persons, including party workers and a few children, fainted and fell down.

Hours after the stampede, Vijay condoled the deaths and said that his "heart is shattered". "My heart is shattered. I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express. I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the swift recovery of those receiving treatment in the hospital," he said in a statement. 

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin held an emergency meeting following the incident. The Chief Minister has announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the victims' families.

Tamil Nadu police have rejected allegations of inadequate deployment of personnel at Thamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay's rally in Karur, where a stampede left 40 people dead and nearly 100 injured on Saturday evening.

Amid criticism that the 500 police personnel deployed could not control the crowd, ADGP (Law & Order) Davidson Devasirvatham said the deployment was made in proportion to the turnout anticipated. "The Karur event was categorised as high-risk. We deployed 500 personnel in the ratio of one cop for every 50 people, anticipating 25,000 people - 2.5 times more than what the organisers themselves had expected. Ultimately, nearly 27,000 people turned up," he said.

"Failure To Deploy Security": EPS On TVK's Rally Stampede In Karur

AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi Palaniswami on Sunday said that the administration's failure to deploy adequate security personnel led to the stampede during the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)'s rally in Karur. The stampede, which occurred while TVK chief and actor Vijay was addressing the rally, left 39 people dead.

"Yesterday, 39 people lost their lives. We were informed that the stampede occurred because of an electric current. Such a campaign was previously held in 4 districts, and the police should have provided adequate security. I don't think that was done. Even in our AIADMK meeting, no proper security was provided," Mr Palaniswami said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced financial assistance for the victims of the tragic stampede at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, where at least 39 people, including children and women, lost their lives and dozens were injured.

Several people, who went to sleep early or did not listen to news were shocked that as many as 39 people were killed and dozens injured.

While some videographers were filming the spot of the stampede, now barricaded by 'Police-Do Not Cross' kind of lengthy tapes and blocked to public, groups of elderly men enquired with photo-journalists present there in disbelief about the stampede.

DMK MP Kanimozhi called the deadly stampede at actor Vijay's rally "shocking" and "distressing".

"The news that many people fainted and were admitted to the hospital due to the crowd congestion in Karur, and that several have lost their lives, is deeply shocking and distressing. Who Is Justice Aruna Jagadeesan, Ex-Judge Who Will Probe Stampede At TVK Chief Rally

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has appointed a commission headed by Justice Aruna Jagadeesan (retired) to investigate the deadly stampede incident at actor-politician Vijay's rally in Karur on Saturday. 

A retired judge of the Madras High Court, Justice Jagadeesan has led many high-profile Commissions of Inquiry in Tamil Nadu.

She served as a puisne judge at the Madras High Court from 2009 until her retirement in 2015.

She probed the violence that broke out following anti-Sterlite protests in Tamil Nadu's Tuticorin in 2018. 13 people were killed in police firing against a massive crowd of protesters opposing the Sterlite Copper smelting plant. Her commission recommended action against 17 police officials, including IPS officers. 

She was also part of a bench that gave a clean chit to the Chennai Police in February 2015, for alleged fake encounters in Velachery that killed five men suspected of bank robbery.

Justice Jagadeesan also probed cases pertaining to the wealth of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister late J Jayalalithaa and her associates.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, reacting to the deadly stampede at actor-politician Vijay's rally, said that never has such a large number of people died during a program organised by a political party in the "history of our state".

"I am standing here with deep sorrow. I am unable to describe the horrific accident that took place in Karur. Yesterday, around 7:45 pm, while I was in Chennai speaking with officials, I received the news that such an incident had occurred. As soon as I received the information, I called former Minister Senthil Balaji, asked him to inquire, and instructed him to go to the hospital," he said.

The Chief Minister added, "In the history of our state, never has such a large number of people lost their lives in a program organised by a political party, and such a tragedy should never happen in the future either. With a heavy heart, I pay homage to those who have lost their lives. A compensation of Rs 10 lakh will be provided to the families of the deceased. A compensation of Rs 1 lakh will be provided to those who were injured. I have ordered the formation of an inquiry commission headed by a retired High Court judge."

He also met the people undergoing treatment today.

Actor-Turned-Politician Vijay's 1st Reaction After Deadly Stampede At Rally

In his first reaction hours after the stampede at his rally in which at least 38 people were killed, actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) President Vijay has said his heart is "shattered" and he is "writhing" in pain.

At least 38 people, including 10 children and 17 women, were killed after a stampede broke out at the actor-politician's rally in Tamil Nadu's Karur, where nearly 30,000 supporters and fans had gathered to catch a glimpse of him on Saturday evening.

Vijay, who left Karur and was seen at the Chennai airport some time later, but made no comment, posted on X hours after reports of the stampede began trickling in. 

"My heart is shattered; I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express," he wrote in Tamil. 

"I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the swift recovery of those receiving treatment in the hospital," he added.

Actor Vijay's Rally Stampede: 38 Of 39 Bodies Identified

The bodies of 38 people who died in the stampede at the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam's rally have been identified, and efforts were on to hand over their remains to their relatives, Dindigul district collector S Saravanan said on Sunday.

The identity of a woman is yet to be established, he said.

"Currently, the work to identify this woman is on, and once it is done, we will follow the due procedure of conducting a post-mortem and hand over the body to her relatives," he said.

An eyewitness of the Karur stampede said that "nothing could have been done to control the crowd" as 39 people were killed at a rally addressed by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and actor Vijay in Karur, Tamil Nadu, on Saturday.

Speaking to ANI, an eyewitness, Nanda Kumar, said, "We were there ourselves. Nothing could be done to control the crowd. He (Vijay) had said he would arrive in Karur by 11 am, and everyone was informed about it. But when he came, it was much delayed. We pray that everyone who was injured recovers fully and returns home safely. But beyond that, such incidents must be prevented from happening again," he said.

"It's hard to understand who is at fault. People had come expecting him to arrive on time; many were accompanied by children, were hungry, or faced difficult situations. Everyone came with the enthusiasm of wanting to see a star. This is deeply distressing."

On Camera, Moment Stampede Broke Out At Actor-Politician Vijay's Rally

Several videos taken at the site of actor-politician Vijay's rally in Tamil Nadu's Karur showed the tragic moment when some people began to fall in the crowd before the situation developed into a stampede.

At least 39 people, including nine children and 17 women, were killed and 46 were injured in the stampede while Vijay, the chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), was addressing them from a campaign bus.

In some of the videos, people were seen screaming for help as they climbed on top of one another to breathe. Some children sat on the shoulders of adults, likely their parents, as they watched Vijay's bus approach from a distance - minutes away from the tragedy.

As the crowd swelled and people started getting suffocated because of the heat and overcrowding, Vijay stopped his speech and started throwing bottles of water at the crowd to help, videos showed.

Tamil Nadu DGP G Venkataraman, while addressing the media, said that actor-politician Vijay arrived at the venue after a delay of seven hours. The TVK party chief was supposed to arrive at the venue at 12 pm.

"Permission was sought between 3 pm and 10 pm. The TVK Twitter account said he would come at 12 pm and the crowd started coming in from 11 am. He came at 7.40 pm. The people lacked sufficient food and water under the hot sun. Our intention is not to blame anyone, but we are just stating the facts," he said.

Mr Kharge said he was deeply distressed by the unfortunate and tragic stampede at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, which claimed the lives of several innocent people.

Former Tamil Nadu Minister and DMK leader V Senthil Balaji arrived at Government Medical College and Hospital, Karur.

He said, "Till now, 31 people have died in the stampede and 58 people have been admitted. After the stampede incident, the CM immediately enquired and ordered the district collector, SP, and me to rush to the hospital, advising us to call extra doctors and provide proper treatment...Tomorrow, the Chief Minister is going to come here himself. As of now, 46 persons are in private hospital, and 12 persons are admitted in a government hospital for treatment."

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expected to visit Karur tomorrow, where several persons, who took part in Vijay's rally are feared dead, reports news agency PTI.

Twenty people including children are feared dead in a stampede during actor-politician Vijay's rally in Tamil Nadu's Karur today, officials at a local hospital said.

Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin, in a social media post, took note of the situation in Karur.

"The news coming from Karur is worrying. I have contacted Minister @V_Senthilbalaji, Honourable Minister @Subramanian_Ma

and the District Collector to provide immediate treatment to the civilians who have fainted due to the crowd and have been admitted to the hospital. I have also ordered the Minister from the nearby Trichy district

@Anbil_Mahesh to provide necessary assistance on a war footing. I have also spoken to the ADGP there to take steps to improve the situation as soon as possible. I request the public to cooperate with the doctors and the police," his post read.
