Those who wish to conceive through In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) technique should avoid taking alcohol as it may hamper their chances of getting pregnant.
In general, women are told to stop drinking when they are trying to conceive. To see how alcohol consumption impacts chances of getting pregnant through IVF, researchers from America studied 25,000 couples, who were trying to conceive through IVF.
It was found that if both the partners drink six units a week equivalent to half a bottle of wine each - their chance of a live birth is cut by a quarter. In women, drinking half a bottle of wine a week cuts their chances of getting pregnant by 18 per cent, while men reduced their chances of a live birth by 14 per cent.
The above findings indicate that couples who want to have a baby through IVF could be significantly harming their parental chances if their weekly consumption was equivalent to a bottle of wine. The findings are further evidence to suggest that alcohol does have an impact and that those women who try for a baby should think about their lifestyle choices.
The researchers recommend couples to abstain from drinking to maximise their chances of IVF success.
