How long will the tubes (grommets) stay in my son’s ear?
Question
My 4 years old son has grommets for the last two years and three months and he still gets recurrent ear infections. If grommets stay in the ear for too long, will the hole stay after the removal? If yes, how long?

Most grommets stay for 6 months to 2 years, but may remain in place for even 5 years. T tubes are designed to stay in indefinitely. Depending on the age of the child, it is rarely that the grommets need to be surgically removed at that stage.
Yes, the chances of a residual perforation are higher if they stay too long, but then the edges are freshened at the time of surgical removal, so the eardrum inevitably heals.
