- Travel-related weight gain is mostly due to water retention, not fat increase
- High salt intake and packaged snacks cause the body to hold extra water
- Irregular meals and low fibre slow digestion, causing bloating and heaviness
Travel and sudden weight gain often feel connected, right? You get back from a trip, your jeans feel a little tighter, your face looks slightly puffy, and the first thought is – Did I really gain weight in just three days? Since it feels real in the moment, it is easy to believe.
But if you think about it, does fat gain actually happen that fast? Not really. What you are noticing is your body reacting to a change in routine, not a sudden increase in fat. Honestly, it is something almost everyone experiences after travelling.
Nutritionist Nmami Agarwal talks about this in an Instagram video. Here is what really happens when you feel “heavier” after travel:
Body Holding On To Water
Think about how your meals look when you are travelling. You eat more outside food, more salt, and maybe even more packaged snacks. Naturally, your body reacts by holding on to extra water. That is why your face might look puffier or your rings feel tighter. It is not fat; it is just water retention.
Slightly Off Digestion
Be honest – are you eating the same way you do at home? Probably not. Less fibre, irregular meals, and maybe not enough water either. This can slow things down and make you feel bloated, heavy, and a little uncomfortable.
Your Sleep Is Not The Same
Travel usually means late nights, early mornings, or just broken sleep. When your sleep is off, your body feels off too. This is why you might notice low energy, a bit of puffiness, and that slightly heavy feeling.
What Actually Helps
Now comes the part where you might think: how can we undo these changes? Well, what you need to do is far simpler than you think. Just drink more water, go for a short walk after meals, and add some fibre back into your food. Also, make sure to get proper sleep.
Once you are back to your usual routine, things start feeling better pretty quickly. You will notice less bloating, your face looking normal again, digestion getting back on track, and an overall more comfortable feeling. So next time you come back from a trip and feel like you have suddenly gained weight, give it a couple of days – your body resets faster than you expect.
