Kolkata: Trinamool Congress candidate from West Bengal's Birbhum parliamentary constituency Satabdi Roy has apologised for remarks she made during a poll campaign in the area recently.

"I'm extremely sorry for what I have said during my poll campaign, if it was really in violation of the Model Code of Conduct," Roy said in a message to state CEO Sunil Gupta last night.

The Election Commission (EC) yesterday issued a showcause notice to Roy, who during campaigning at Mohammad Bazar in her constituency, allegedly promised to give priority in development to the areas which would give her maximum support, inviting charge of violation of model code of conduct by opposition parties.

The EC sought a report from the district magistrate of Birbhum on April 27.

"Roy was to reply within 24-hours, but she replied immediately within an hour of receiving the notice," the OSD in CEO's office Amit Roy Chowdhury said in Kolkata.

Roy's assurance to the people was partial in nature and in violation of the model code of conduct, EC sources said, adding that nobody could divide people on the lines of their thinking.
