How the numbers stack up

New Delhi:

A resurgent Congress is getting ready to give a new shine to governance. All preparations are on for the formation of a new govt at the Centre today. Manmohan Singh will stake claim to form a UPA Government for a second term.

UPA's tally in the new Lok Sabha soared on Tuesday to reach 322 mark, far above the magic figure of 272, as it got unexpected support from BSP, RJD and SP (48 MPs) besides some other parties and independents.

BSP and SP, the two bitter rivals in Uttar Pradesh which fought elections against Congress in UP and elsewhere, pledged their support saying that they want to strengthen secular forces and to keep BJP out.

The UPA coalition has won 262 seats on its own while the SP has 23 and the BSP has 21 members in the House.

Besides these two parties, RJD with four MPs and JD(S) with three MPs also conveyed their support to Congress-led UPA. Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik), with its lone member Babulal Marandi, a former BJP leader, also extended its support to UPA.

Ghulam Hassan Khan, who won the elections from Ladakh as an Independent, too pledged his support along with Sadashiv Ram Mandalik, an Independent from Maharashtra.
