As the nation is fighting against the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, several boards including Maharashtra have cancelled the Class 10 board exams. The Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Varsha Gaikwad, while announcing the cancellation of SSC board exams 202, had said that the marks will be awarded to students based on ‘internal assessment' or ‘objective criterion', however, the board has not taken any decision so far on how students will be marked. The Maharashtra SSC exams were scheduled to be held between April 23 and May 21.

For those in Class 12 (HSC), the board has postponed the exams till May-end and said that a final decision on its conduct will be taken in June after reviewing the COVID-19 situation in the state.

The decision to cancel Maharashtra SSC (Class 10) exams came soon after the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had announced the cancellation of Class 10 board exams due to the present situation emerging out of the coronavirus outbreak and in order to arrest its spread. CBSE has already released its marking scheme for Class 10 students. CBSE will evaluate Class 10 students on the basis of their performances in the pre-board and internal assessment exams held during the academic year 2020-21.

According to the marking scheme released by CBSE, while 20 marks for each subject will be for internal assessment, 80 marks will be calculated on basis of the student's performance in various tests or exams conducted throughout the year. For those who have not attended one or more of their pre-board examinations, schools will conduct one-to-one assessment telephonically to prepare their final results in the absence of board examinations.
