South Delhi heist: Police arrest one person, detain four others; Rs. 1.5 crore recovered
New Delhi: In a major breakthrough, police today arrested one suspect and detained four others allegedly involved in the Rs 5 crore heist from a cash van in the Defence Colony area in south Delhi on Friday. So far the cops have recovered Rs 1.5 crore from the suspects. Raids are conducted to recover the rest of the amount.

According to police, five suspects, identified as Vijay, Deepak, Harikishan and Shekhar from Chirag Delhi and Bhola from Ghoga Village, were involved in the heist. While Deepak was arrested, four others were detained on Saturday. Police say, out of the five accused, Harkrishan and Deepak have criminal records.

The cops have recovered Rs 1.5 crore from Deepak, and a .765 bore revolver from one of the suspects detained.

Yesterday, the group of men waylaid a van carrying five crores for a bank in Delhi; shot dead one of the guards in the van; then forced the others out; and raced away with it. The cash van was abandoned in Hauz Rani in south Delhi and the cash trunks were left in a nearby village.

Police recovered two empty cash trunks from Khirki village at around 7:30 am on Saturday after security guards in the area spotted them.

According to police, the Hyundai Verna car, which the robbers used during the heist, was stolen. The car, which was left abandoned at the site, was used to intercept the Maruti Eeco van carrying cash.
