New Delhi:
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal visited Jantar Mantar today to show solidarity with the students from the North-East who are protesting against the death of Nido Taniam, a 20-year-old from Arunachal Pradesh.
Here are the highlights of his speech:
Nido's fight isn't a North Eastern issue
It is a national issue
We have to fight this racism issue together
South Indians also face similar troubles
Nido's fight is my fight
I got to know of this incident through media...within an hour we ordered an independent magisterial enquiry
Not under pressure but because I feel for you people
I wrote on the file if Delhi Police is one of the accused, they can't do an independent investigation
We'll ensure there is justice in this case. Why was an FIR registered after 2 days?
We will never know the truth if Delhi Police probes the matter
We will come to know the truth in 3-4 weeks if the police were involved
Had you all not gathered together, then this case would have gone unnoticed
I became the Chief Minister, I could have taken a big house, police protection
Had I said I need 10 Lakhs from every police station, I would have been a great Chief Minister
Whoever is guilty in this case, whether it is the police or the accused, we will have to get together to ensure they are hanged
Criminal Justice system needs to be improved if we want to make Delhi a safer place (Asked what three things he will do to ensure justice)
In principal, I agree North Eastern history should be included in textbooks
Judicial enquiry has been setup
Third, I have a suggestion: You form a committee which the Delhi government will notify. You give us suggestions which we shall implement
Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia:
Next session onwards, school books will have a chapter on North Eastern history
Education department will teach the people of Delhi about respecting people from North East, South India
