British national found dead in Delhi hotel

New Delhi: A 51-year-old British national was on Monday found dead inside his hotel room in Central Delhi's Paharganj, police said.

According to police, a semi-decomposed body was recovered from hotel Krishna Cottage around 3 am on Monday. He was later identified as Stephen James.

"We received a PCR call from the hotel staff after they noticed foul smell coming out of room number 102 of the hotel whose door was locked from inside," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central District) Alok Kumar.

A police team was rushed to the hotel which broke open the door. The body was found lying in the room clad in a towel. Mr James was last seen by the staff on Saturday evening.

Till now nothing suspicious has been found so the possibility of murder has been ruled out, he said.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death, police said.

"James had checked-in at the hotel on July 3. On July 6, he had gone to speak to the hotel manager as he had to clear some dues. It appears that James had consumed alcohol as a
bottle and a glass were found on the table in his room.

"All his valuables including Indian currency, mobile phone and other items were intact and untouched. The British Embassy has been informed about the incident by the police," a senior police official said.
