Tension in Dehradun after cops thrash MLA

Dehradun: Tense situation prevailed in Prem Nagar area in Dehradun after Uttarakhand Police allegedly beat up ruling BJP MLA Rajkumar following an argument over stopping of his vehicle.

The incident occurred when Rajkumar's vehicle was stopped by police in view of a traffic snarl in the area. This led to heated arguments between the police personnel and Rajkumar.

Police then dragged Rajkumar, MLA from Sahaspur constituency, out of the vehicle and allegedly began beating him up. Later, they brought him to the Prem Nagar police station.

A large number of party workers and some MLAs gathered at the police station and vandalised furniture and destroyed files, police said.

As the tension mounted, senior police officials rushed to the area to calm the situation.

Police sources said Chief Minister R P Nishak expressed deep concern over the incident and asked the senior officers to take steps to defuse tension.

"The situation is tense but under control," said SSP Dehradun Abhinav Kumar.
